The Wombat is a steelhead fly built for movement and can be tailored in a number of ways to suit the angler. Originating from Alaska fishing guide Brian Kite aka "Wombat", the fly can be tied in any number of colors. The orange and red, blue and black, and pink and purple variations are a few of the favorites I tie for clients. Noted steelheader George Cook referred to the fly as Gob O'eggs.
If you need to change the weight of the fly, change out the material used for the eyes. For lighter flies, slower finking, slower water, use bead chain. For faster sinking in quick running water lead eyes can be used. We use brass in the pattern today, a medium sinking material.
