Severely struck

I have a heavy inflamation of cabin fever now -- and winter hasn't even really started yet

I know that it's not really great reading, but I just have to let it out: I have been struck severely by cabin fever! December has been as dull as I remember any December, and my latest trips have been into a great, overcast, fishless void. I haven't caught a fish since November the 18th, and that was a small one just to rub it in. My last good trip (fish wise) was two months ago today.

The weather seems to have been the same for weeks and weeks, and even though the forecast says that there's a change up ahead it may be from bad to worse. The temperatures will fall and the wind will change from Northwest to Northeast. Northwest means cold and humid weather in this part of the world, but Northeast means colder but at least dry weather. So we can expect some cold but possibly clear days. Could mean some fishing days, but on the other hand: you don't go fishing here in December because you want to catch fish (if you know what I mean). The chance of running into fish is slim. When you do catch they may be nice, but the probablility of hitting anything is low.

A bunch of good friends and myself have been logging all trips and catches since 2003. This log now contains information about 900 trips (1715 man trips since we were more than one person on most trips) that produced 2688 fish altogether. That's 3 fish per day and 1.6 fish per person per day - on the average.
We had 354 skunked trips in that period - a whole year worth of skunked trips in 5 years! One third of all trips were fishless! Yikes!

It also shows that if you want to catch a sea trout on the coast here, you should go in March, April or May or in September and in particular October. And you should NOT go in December!

Well, I have been out four times in December anyway, and it seems that my fishing year is over. Now I'm looking forward to the season starting on the Swedish coast, to our annual Bornholm trip and the spring fishing.

But... spring won't be here before a couple of months or three, so I need to brace myself with a lot of patience.

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
