Chillimps

Small orange fly for for garfish

Chillimps fly
Chillimps or Jydsk Chillimps is a fly that I picked up from a classical Danish stream sea trout fly (see comment below about the real Swedish origin). My prime use of it though, is for garfish,. Used in small sizes (#12-16), it's quite deadly, and the garfish will willingly go for the fly, that hooks the hard billed fish very efficiently because of it''s small size.

Hook 12-16 down eye streamer/wet fly
Thread Red or black
Tail Orange hackle fiber or small hackle tips, 2/3 of hook length
Body Orange dubbing
Rib Thin oval gold tinsel
Hackle One orange palmer hackle and one slightly larger orange front hackle
Head Tying thread

The garfish seems generally happy with any small orange fly. My friend Henning from the Bananaflies fishes them with a hook dubbed with orange SLF and a back of white antron. I did some experiments last year, using a hook wound over with some orange yarn. Highly effective and durable. But the Chillimps looks so much better.

Chilimps is not a Danish fly as was suggested in a comment on this page, or fly for garfish. It's a Swedish fly which was created by the great fisherman Rolf Vilhelmsson, after a late night at the Walhalla Inn by the river Mörrum in Sweden. This happened in the beginning of the 1940's, witnessed by famous fishermen as Olle Törnblom and Sven Halman, of which the former improved the fly later.
The name refers to the colour of a shrimp, which also gave name to the fly. But, perhaps under the influence of some whisky, the name was altered to the pidginenglish version chillimpi. The day after this Vilhelmsson caught a 20 pounder in the river, noted it in the fishing journal, unfortunately with the last letter barely seen. That's why it's called Chilimps today.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
