AquaFly flybox

Imagine an iMac of the first generation as a flybox: cool and soft shape, great color and translucent. That's what the AquaFly flyboxes are. GFF partner Martin Joergensen has been using one lately.

Imagine an iMac of the first generation as a flybox: cool and soft shape, great color and translucent. That's what the AquaFly flyboxes are.

Fly Tying Chronicles in California (website has gone) was kind enough to let me try one of these neat boxes, and it has soon become a favourite.
I transferred my flies from two other boxes into this roomy construction and I have been using it the two or three times I have been out since.

The AquaFly flybox is not like your average box. First of all it's soft in its shape. Like a lot of modern design, it follows the trend of round corners and soft edges. Look at cameras and other traditionally square and hard-edged designs, and notice how the forms have dissolved and softened during the last decade or so.
Same thing here: the traditional rectangular flybox has become soft and nice to the touch and kind of a rectangular kidney shape. It's rather large in size, but for my type of medium saltwater flies, it's perfect.

The box is designed to be waterproof and has a central pane and two lids. The central part is lined with foam on both sides - in my review box it's smooth, but a ripple foam version is available too. I have had no fuss with the smooth foam, which does get marks and holes, but works well just the same. The foam can be changed an new foam pads ara available.

The lids are hinged in such a way that the box can open almost to lie flat, which is more than enough to give you easy access to the flies.
The generous room in the box allows for large and voluminous flies, and being two-sided it easily accommodates the number of flies that most anglers need to have a good selection.

Three bright colors

The smooth foam allows you to set your flies as you please, but for people with the urge for a bit more structure, there's a rippled foam version with a particular curved design to the ripples.

The plastic of the box is a matte, but translucent blue, green or white, which allows you to see the flies through the lids. The lids close with an affirming snap, and have no locks or tabs. The omission of such features, the hidden hinges and the soft shape of the box makes it slide easily into any large pocket with no snags.

The price is 25 US$ per box, which doesn't make it the least expensive box on the market, but absolutely doesn't make it expensive either. It's an excellent box in a superb quality.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
