Catskill Dry Fly Tied Dette Method. I joined the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild this past year and at one of their Zoom tying sessions, they went over this fly pattern. It is a variation of the classic Adams dry fly...see my video of that fly in its original form.

Hook: Dry fly standard length. 12-16. I used a 14.
Wings: Grizzly Rooster hackle tips. I used a Whiting Rooster Winger Cape. This is not a vintage cape but one currently available for sale. There are several good sources. Magpie Fly Tying is one.
Hackle: Brown and Grizzly Rooster sized to hook.
Body Hackle: Grizzly rooster sized one size below hook size.
Body: Olive wool yarn. I used Appleton Crewel. This is a wool yarn for sewing with a needle so it is thin. Appleton is a very widely available brand at craft and yarn stores. It is very inexpensive. It can be pulled apart as well for dubbing.
Tail: Grizzly rooster fibers.

Thread: I used Olive because with the Dette method, you tie off at the tail and wrap over the hackle and wool back toward the eye and I did not want that to show through.

I was not familiar with this pattern until this year. Guild members mentioned loving to skitter this fly. I look forward to trying it out next year.

The Guild is not just for experts. You only need to be interested in the Catskill traditions to join. I am no expert, but looking forward to learning more. To see for yourself visit them at.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher has recently been updated to a new publishing system, and there may be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
