How to Tie the Isoperla (Yellow Sally) Nymph – with Håkan Karsnäser
The massive stonefly hatches in the U.S., especially in Montana, are legendary. It’s no surprise that even the biggest trout can’t resist them when you see the shucks left behind!
Depending on where you fish, stonefly imitations can be either a must-have or a nice-to-have in your fly box. In Montana, they’re essential. In Scandinavia, they’re useful but not always a game changer.
Here in Scandinavia, we still have several stonefly species that hatch throughout most of the season. One of the prettiest is the Yellow Sally (Isoperla grammatica) — a small to medium-sized yellow stonefly. It doesn’t often bring trout to the surface, but catching one on a well-tied imitation is always rewarding.
In this video, Håkan Karsnäser demonstrates how to tie a realistic Isoperla nymph using the Pro Sportfisher Trout System — a clever and innovative setup that makes it easy to tie lifelike stonefly imitations.
