Barr's Viz-A-Dun
John Barr's Viz-A-Dun is a great little mayfly pattern that is durable, floats well and makes a great indicator style dry fly for hanging a small emerger or micro dry behind.
Sand Fly
This sand fly imitation is one of two that are listed in John Reid's Clyde Style flies. It's a great fly for early to mid season fishing and well worth having in your box.
Copper Nymph
The Copper Nymph is a Scottish fly that could be seen as something of a precursor to the Copper John, but it's a fantastic river pattern for trout and grayling in its own right.
Duo Style Klinkhamer
Whether you call it the duo, New Zealand style, hedged bet or klink & dink, hanging a nymph of of a dry fly is an absolutely deadly method at times.
Dark Needle
The dark needle is a great pattern from Edmonds & Lee's "Brook and River Trouting". It's ideal toward the end of the season and is very effective when there are small stoneflies on the water.
Lime Trude
The Lime Trude is an effective attractor dry. Representing nothing specific, it's an ideal choice for prospecting, especially with a nymph dropper.
Jig Hook Peeping Caddis
The peeping caddis is an absolutely fantastic nymph for trout and grayling year round. This jig hook version is ideal for all styles of nymphing and should be in every river angler's box.
Deep Flatwing
This version of the popular flat wing is ideal when fishing at depth with fast sinking lines. The hidden tungsten cone sinks the fly at a rate comparable with the faster sinkers which helps avoid tan...
Lightsaber
The Lightsaber is a very effective fly for pollock, cod, coalfish and other cold saltwater species. Try it in various colours and sizes for different locations.
Jack Frost
The Jack Frost is an old still water lure pattern that has lost popularity over the years. However, it is still very effective and this modern competition style mini-lure version is a great choice for...
Dirty Yellow Mayfly
This bushy top dropper can be very effective around mayfly time, but is also worth having in the box later in the season too.
Lifeboat Dun
The Lifeboat Dun is a great dry fly option for fish that have become a bit selective during a mayfly hatch.
Grey Rollover Mayfly
Patsy Deery's Rollover Mayfly is a great choice for blowy days when the fish are up eating duns on the surface. It also makes a pretty decent dapping fly when the mayfly is on,.
Flashback Stalking Chomper
This variation on an old stalwart is a great stalking bug that remains popular for sight fishing small still waters.
Whisky Muddler
This little muddler is a real fish catcher. More compact than the traditional whisky fly, this still causes plenty of disturbance but is more likely to elicit a positive eat.
Kate McLaren Muddler
The Kate McLaren is a great fly in its own right, this muddler version just adds a bit more fish pulling power.
Hot Hare's Ear Suspender Buzzer
This suspender buzzer is a great choice for those dull overcast days where the UV index is high, the fluorescent material really pops in those conditions helping the fish to pick the fly out.To sup
Pheasant Tail Shuttlecock
The shuttlecock is one of the most popular still water dry flies with good reason. This simple pheasant tail version is a great choice for picky fish and is generally best fished singly for quick cas...
Making Orkney Peach Dubbing
As promised here's the video of how to prepare your own Orkney peach dubbing. The process is pretty easy and you can experiment with other colours or dubbing ingredients; this is how I prepare the fl...
Watten Warrior
Although it hails from Loch Watten in Caithness, the Watten Warrior is effective anywhere you're fishing wets for browns.
Yellow Tip
Billy Quail's yellow tip is a simple but very effective little fly for calmer conditions. Most effective in smaller sizes, it fishes particularly well near the surface when fish are on midges or small...
Doobry
The Doobry is an excellent bumble style attractor pattern that is loved by both wild and stocked fish. Certainly it should be in your box if fishing the lochs of Western Scotland.
Orkney Peach Muddler
Fished on top dropper or on the point this fly a great option for drawing fish to your team and is a fantastic taker of fish both wild and stocked.
Lethal Weapon
Rab Adam tied this fly for Ayrshire's reservoirs, but it certainly works well further afield. To support my channel and enter the giveaways head to https://www.patreon.com/flickingfeathers and become ...
