While he for sure tied the fly in hand on blind eye hooks you can vary the technique to create so many different types of flies.

Here I am using...

Hook: Daiichi 1560 size 10
Thread: cotton black sewing thread
Eye: Silk beading cord #3 Red
Hackle: Grizzly Cock hackle

This fly is killer and its ugly/buggy look just works. Give it a go.
