You might remember Andy Royer from the excellent DVD Trout Grass about his venture to China to pick out the best bamboo - tonkin - for bamboo rod building. His business Bamboo Broker is one of the places you can get high quality tonkin for rod building.
Now Andy is at it again, but this time he as focused on another of those critical rod builder's components: the cork. In the video shown below he tells about the process of selecting the best cork and how he picks the Flor and Flor Plus or Grade A Plus from the bunch. He describes what is required for a ring to wind up in his selection and what it takes to be the best of the best in the bag of dozens of thousands of cork rings.
And becoming the royalty of cork rings is not easy. Andy says that only about 5 in 10,000 rings selected by the producer as high quality winds up in his Grade A Plus category, so an order of 100 A+ rings might not be easy to fill for him.
The video is well worth the watch - even for the ones of us who don't build rods. And if you want to buy the best of the best, go to Andy's new web page Picky Bastard Cork.
