Dwayne's Bio

My name is Dwayne Miller and I was born and presently reside on Prince Edward Island, Canada. I've been chasing trout around PEI since the age of 5 and found out about flyrods at 12. I continued to fish both for a few more years but in 1988 that all changed as my good friend and mentor, Scott Mitchell turned me onto chasing Atlantic salmon with the flyrod. This was a life changing moment, and I've been on a mad whirl'wind ride chasing these magnificent fish ever since. I am quite proud of the fact that I have never retained an Atlantic Salmon. From the first kelt that Spring in 1988, I knew I was a catch and release man. Tying flies came the very same year and my first was a Green Wooly worm and a Mickey Finn. I still have my very first fly, framed above the desk.

My tying style is open to public discussion. I owe some credit to a great many people over the years, having gleaned a little here and there from many of the greats of the sport. Today I enjoy tying all styles of flies, from trout dries and nymphs, to classic streamers, to full dress patterns, but the one style that has truly captivated me are Dee style flies. The Dee to my eye is the perfect marriage of form, function, skill and beauty.

I tie and fish a great many styles of flies and I think that is a key to becoming a better all around fly tyer. I have a guiding business on PEI, Fly Fish The Island and guide for trout and salmon. I have a fly tying business as well. In 2002, I organized a local fly tying group in Charlottetown which now has 20 members. The Charlottetown Fly Tying Club meets every week from November to April. I am actively involved with numerous river groups on PEI including the PEISA, MRMC, Trout Unlimited, ASF and others. I'm a strong supporter of catch and release angling.

My work has now been included in three books. Don MacLean's "A Little Thing I Tied Myself". Paul Marriner's second edition of "Atlantic Salmon Flies" and Damian Lee Welsh's "Atlantic Salmon Flies of Nova Scotia"
