Perdigon flies are extremely heavy, boasting a tungsten weighted bead. They are also very smooth being coated by UV resin, so they get down deep in the water, to where the trout are very quickly. I find these to be some of the best lead flies to fish. Many times I like to fish a brightly colored "attractor" lead fly, then drop something more natural and unweighted off the back when fishing two flies. That makes the Chartreuse version of this fly perfect for that application with the flashy rib in the body, and the bright hot spot. But the olive version is equally as effective if you are looking to throw something more subtle. Drop a small midge or baetis off the the back, and you have a recipe for an amazing day on the water.
Speaking of dropping a midge off the back, starting next week, for the entire month of February I will be tying up some midges. Both pupae, and emergers. These are mostly quite simple flies, but tied extremely small to mimic the tiny midge which looks like and is actually related to mosquitoes. Next week I will be starting off this series with the extremely popular Zebra midge and its variations.
