Springtail

The Springtail has a soft and bendy body made from a boiled coil of colorful, elastic jewelry string

I stopped counting

For basically all the almost 30 years of its existence, I have been following the traffic patterns on GFF. I stopped about a year ago, and here is why.

Taco Emerger

The Taco Emerger was inspired by the split case patterns which are popular in the US

#32 Wonderbody Parachute

Notes for a #32 Wonderbody Parachute tied by Dutch fly tier Henk Verhaar

Sillikix

I like rubber legs on dry flies. Their suggestion of something edible is the fish equivalent of ringing a dinner gong.

Feather Mechanic II

South African Gordon Spuy’s second book is different from the first one - but then again somewhat similar, which is a good thing.

Facehugger

At the vice no one can hear you scream.

Baltic flies for calm and clear water

In this part of the series on different coastal conditions, we look at a common situation: water clear as gin and maybe even calm as a mirror. Not the easiest of fishing conditions, but adapting gear and flies to the situation helps.

Canyon Caddis

This is a fly that was designed for a wooded canyon on one of the author’s favourite small rivers where the water has carved out a deep narrow channel through the limestone

Doing a Step-By-Step

This article teaches you how to do a proper series of step-by-step photos of a fly pattern being tied - also known as an SBS.

Mörrum - The Best Flies

A really beautiful book about a very important Swedish river and - not least - a group of its most productive anglers and their flies.

Neoprene Beetle

This neat little beetle’s body is made from extruded neoprene cord, which is widely available and a really useful tying material

FISK - scaled-up

This book features some stunning images of fish! It’s a Danish book, but I think it deserves some attention here anyway

What happened to GFF?

For a painfully long time in August 2023 the Global FlyFisher was dead and gone. Our DNS-provider stumbled and took all their clients with them in the fall.

GFF is still alive!

The site is back and in operation, but the downtime has led to some unfortunate errors, which I’m trying to fix as you read this

Inspiration and Imitation

The story about how the Toothpick Stone Clinger was inspired by turning over rocks and taking pictures

A couple of leaders from Sweden

A couple of HL Leonard leaders were added to LeaderCalc thanks to Swedish Johan Algén

The threat of Drupal 8… eh… 9... eh… 10!

GFF is running on Drupal 7, and Drupal 7 is terminal. It’s destined to die. And upgrading is not an easy task, not least because version 10 is already there.

Highlighter Caddis

The name of this fly is to be taken ad verbatim. You do need a highlighter pen to tie it

When AI invents flies

We challenged artificial intelligence to create a fly pattern. It went fairly well ... and then again … not quite well.

Hitched Hoglouse

The hoglouse is also known as a sowbug or a cress bug, and is a very common freshwater crustacean. Here’s an easy imitation using an interesting tying technique.

The Prefab Shrimp

My shrimp patterns have always been pretty impressionistic. That was until I saw a video using some pre-made legs… then I dug into my stash, and a fairly realistic shrimp emerged

Back to Basics

Sometimes simple is best. Simple and scruffy in fact. Nick Thomas shows you how to tie a both simple and scruffy fly.

Salmon fishing in Iceland, where to start

Iceland with its fascinating extremes and great runs of salmon is a dream destination for many anglers. Here’s where to start.

A year’s fishing in Argentina

Argentinian Pedro Miles tells the story of his fishing in Argentina during the year 2022, and man, there’s been some fishing going on!

How to invent a fly pattern

Coming up with new fly patterns is essentially like coming up with new dishes: it’s basically impossible. Everything is a variation of a variation of something that has been made before - even The Yarn Thief

The Third Yarn Thief

How to tie the fly pattern that I "invented" in connection with a discussion about coming up with new fly patterns.

Micro Minnow

Minnows upcycle small lifeforms into a tasty package of protein for bigger fish to eat, so minnow imitations make effective flies

Colt Actionrod Restoration

Jim Burchette restored an old glass rod - stripped and rebuilt it - and it came out as good as new

Imaging Imitations

Want to take stylish fly photos? This book will go through all the gear, accessories and methods that author Nick Thomas uses.

LeaderCalc 2023

The online leader calculator has had an overhaul, and has been updated with several new leader formulas and a bunch of new features

The Fish’s View

Why go to the trouble of photographing a fly that is soaking wet? Well, in many cases it can dramatically alter the appearance of the imitation.

How to use LeaderCalc

This article covers how to use the online fly fishing leader caculator LeaderCalc for creating your own perfect custom made hand tied leaders

The world's smallest shrimp fly

This fly is unbelievably small! It was tied by me for Dutch Hans Weilenmann’s project SFP or Smallest Fly Page. The pattern was tied once in 1998 – and probably won't be again!

A Bamboo Saga

A couple months ago my wife said she had found the perfect gift for me. She had arranged for me to take a bamboo fly rod making class.

Bites in Pink Satin

Satin ribbon can’t be used in as many different ways as organza, but it definitely makes some juicy looking fish snacks.

This is an extract from British Ben Jailler’s new book, Fish Camp Fail

The Water Vole

This articulated fly tied by Danish Sune Andersen was inspired by the European water vole

This is a dual purpose stonefly pattern tied on a jig hook. It can act both as a dry fly and an indicator

Skin & Foam Pupa

An extended body caddis pupa tied with latex ribbon - the al dente tagliatelle of fly tying materials.

Innes’ books on salmon flies and salmon fishing

Some books tend to go under the radar, but are still small gems of knowledge, history ... and fly patterns ... These books from 2016/17 have been hiding in my shelf for way too long.

Canvas Crab

As everyone knows crab-like means moving sideways, not forwards or backwards. The Canvas Crab fly moves sideways as crab flies should.

Softly Softly

The Partridge Parachute Emerger – or PPE for short – is a soft hackle dry fly, all limp and spindly

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
