Red Abbey

The classic salmon flies with whole featherwings or married wings were time-consuming and complicated to tie. Gradually, the wings were replaced by hairwings, and one of the first modern hair-winged salmon flies is believed to be the Red Abbey. It is unclear who is the originator of the fly, but A.S. Trude is one of the first to be credited for it. The combination of the red and brown colors has proven effective for salmon, and in the clear-water salmon rivers such as the Canadian Restigouche, the first salmon were caught at Red Abbey many years ago. In this video, we have had Håkan Karsnäser demonstrate the tying of this fine little hair-winged salmon fly.
